The Client & Challenge
Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre serves both the community and the neighbouring school, with its sports hall used for a variety of activities including badminton, indoor football, and general fitness sessions.
The existing lighting system consisted of 36 sodium high-intensity discharge luminaires rated at 250W each. Over time, the fittings had degraded, producing poor colour rendering and a yellow-orange hue that no longer met the required standards for indoor sport.
The challenge was to design and deliver a modern, efficient lighting system that would restore light quality, reduce energy consumption, and give the client greater flexibility to adjust light levels based on activity.

The Solas Solution
Lighting Design
24 high-performance linear high bay LED luminaires were installed, each delivering 26,000 lumens at a top power rating of 200 watts. This configuration improved uniformity and brightness while significantly reducing total energy demand.
Control System
A scene selector system was added, allowing the client to choose between three lighting levels to suit different activities. Lower settings provide additional energy savings during casual or training use.

Project Delivery
The installation was carefully planned to minimise disruption to the school and community users. Work was completed during daytime hours, with half of the sports hall remaining open so lessons and activities could continue safely. Clear communication with the site team ensured smooth coordination throughout the project.
All fittings were tested, commissioned, and handed over on schedule, delivering a high-quality finish and seamless transition to the new LED system.

Continuing to Improve Facilities
