Solas was appointed to design and deliver a complete LED lighting upgrade for the sports hall at Matravers School in Wiltshire. The project aimed to provide high-quality, energy-efficient lighting that met international sporting standards while supporting the school’s ambition to expand community use of its facilities.
The Client & Challenge
Matravers School wanted to improve the quality and efficiency of lighting in its sports hall to provide a professional environment for students and local community users.
The existing lighting system, based on 6-lamp 55W PLL fittings, was inefficient and required frequent maintenance. Accessing and relamping the high-level fittings was costly and time-consuming, often leaving areas inadequately lit between maintenance cycles.
The school needed a modern, low-maintenance solution that would deliver consistent light levels suitable for a range of sports and activities, from training sessions to competition use.
The rapport with Solas was instant. We were impressed with their knowledge and had confidence that their solution would be right. We have set ambitious targets to increase the use of the sports hall within the community and knew that the lighting would be key to this so choosing the right supplier was important to us. Solas did not disappoint and met the high expectations we had. They completed the work on time and within budget. The electricians onsite were a credit to the company. They were keen to start, courteous and worked efficiently.

The Solas Solution
Solas conducted a full lighting review and designed an LED system tailored to the space and performance requirements of the hall.
Lighting Design
High-performance LED high-bay luminaires were specified to replace the outdated fittings, ensuring even, efficient illumination across the playing surface. LED twin-spot emergency lights were also installed to improve safety and compliance.
Control System
A multifunction control panel was introduced, enabling lighting levels to be adjusted between 300, 500, and 750 lux. This flexibility allows staff to set appropriate light levels for different sports and activities, optimising both user experience and energy consumption.
System Benefits
The upgrade delivered improved light uniformity, lower maintenance requirements, and substantial energy savings, all while meeting international lighting standards for indoor sports.
Project Delivery
The installation was completed during the school’s half-term break to eliminate disruption to lessons and community bookings.
The Solas team worked efficiently and safely, completing the project within six weeks of the initial meeting and fully to programme and budget.
