Solas was appointed to design and install a high-efficiency lighting system for Stericycle, the UK and Ireland’s leading provider of healthcare waste and compliance services. The project aimed to improve light levels in the facility’s operational areas while significantly reducing energy use and maintenance demands.
The Client & Challenge
Stericycle manages complex waste-handling operations that require high standards of safety, visibility, and reliability. The existing metal halide lighting system was inefficient, provided inadequate light levels, and had become increasingly costly to maintain.
The client sought a replacement system that would deliver better visibility for operatives, improve overall lighting quality, and achieve measurable energy and cost savings across the facility.

Lighting Design
The new system was configured to deliver consistent, high-quality illumination across the workspace, replacing outdated metal halide fittings with precision-engineered luminaires that achieve excellent colour rendering and coverage.
Energy Efficiency
The luminaires provide immediate full-output lighting, eliminating warm-up periods and dramatically reducing power consumption compared to the previous system.

Lighting Efficiency for Healthcare Operations
After completion, Solas ensured Freedom Leisure’s team were confident in using and maintaining the new system through on-site training and follow-up support. Performance checks one month later verified that the system was running exactly as intended.
The upgrade has set a new standard for efficiency and control within the centre, providing a dependable platform for ongoing operational savings.
We needed to replace the new lighting as the old system was not fit for use and required a new plant system. The audit that Solas carried out not only proved the correct lighting for our facility but incorporated energy efficiency and cost savings in a very short space of time. This was clearly highlighted in the quotation with figures supplied by Stericycle and easily understood. The job was carried out in a prompt fashion with date agreed with Stericycle and was carried out in a professional manner with the installation team of a high calibre. The overall view from staff is ‘Great, how did we manage to do anything under the old lights?’. The system has been proven to be utterly reliable with no issues to date and I would not hesitate to recommend to any other person seeking a quality product and service. We hopefully will be looking to carry out further improvements in the near future, with no other company being considered.
