Solas was appointed to deliver an LED lighting upgrade for University College Hospital at Westmoreland Street, part of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The project formed part of the Trust’s wider carbon reduction strategy and focused on improving energy efficiency, light quality, and comfort within two wards and the nurses’ accommodation.
The Client & Challenge
University College Hospital at Westmoreland Street is a specialist facility providing surgical and urological care within UCLH’s central London estate. As part of its sustainability and operational improvement programme, the Trust sought to replace outdated lighting systems with a modern, energy-efficient alternative that would provide reliable performance and a calm, comfortable atmosphere for both patients and staff.
The challenge was to complete the works within a live hospital environment where cleanliness, discretion, and minimal disruption were essential. The new lighting needed to deliver consistent illumination with a soft, natural appearance suitable for clinical and residential areas.
The Solas Solution
Solas provided a complete LED retrofit solution, replacing traditional fittings with high-efficiency luminaires selected for their reliability, longevity, and visual quality.
Lighting Design
he specification included LED circular panels, 600x600mm LED panels, and bulkhead luminaires with integrated microwave sensors to provide energy savings through automatic control.
Installation Approach
The retrofit design allowed quick, efficient replacement of existing fittings with minimal disturbance to hospital operations.
System Benefits
The new lighting provided a warm, comfortable appearance that improved the visual environment for staff and patients alike, while significantly reducing energy consumption and maintenance requirements.
Project Delivery
All work was planned and carried out in close coordination with UCLH’s estates and facilities team to ensure safety, hygiene, and minimal impact on hospital activities. Installation teams worked flexibly around clinical schedules, completing the work safely and efficiently.
The lighting was fully commissioned and handed over on time, delivering immediate operational benefits and zero disruption to patient care.
Results & Impact
The new LED lighting system has improved visibility, comfort, and atmosphere across the wards and nurses’ accommodation. The soft, natural light has been well received by staff and patients, providing a more pleasant and welcoming environment while achieving measurable energy and carbon savings.
